Tom Matte Death – 53 years prior, running back Tom Matte corralled his Baltimore Colts partners as they prepared for the 1968 NFL title game against the Browns in Cleveland.
“I’m returning home Sunday,” said Mr. Matte, a Cleveland local, “so don’t you SOBs humiliate me out there.”
Cautioned, the Colts won, 34-0, as the extravagant child scored three scores.
“We played a close wonderful game,” said Dan Sullivan, the right gatekeeper. “Furthermore, every time Matte scored, he ran directly to the stands and warmly greeted the fans.”
Mr. Matte, who played 12 years in Baltimore and embraced the city as his own, passed on of intricacies from leukemia Tuesday at his home in Ruxton. He was 82.
Raven’s mentor John Harbaugh noticed that his mom, the previous Jackie Cipiti, and Mr. Matte went to Shaw High School in East Cleveland, Ohio, simultaneously, and that his folks and Mr. Matte and his significant other, Judy, have been companions since.
“So when we came to town, one of the primary individuals to invite us were Tom and Judy Matte,” Mr. Harbaugh said. “We went out to supper, and he was only an amazing character, and he’s awesome. We love him, we love the Mattes, and we realize that he’s a man of confidence. He’s with his Maker at this moment, and sympathies to their family.”
Veteran Fox 45 sportscaster Bruce Cunningham acknowledged Mr. Matte with assisting him with getting to know Baltimore and the games figures who populated the city after Cunningham showed up from Yorktown, Virginia. Mr. Cunningham, who worked with Mr. Matte on TV and in radio for in excess of twelve years, said Mr. Matte typified satisfaction.
“Tom Matte is the just one of those they at any point made,” he said. “I’ve never met anybody like him. You were unable to be inside five feet of Tom Matte and not grin. He was only that person. He just bobbed through life, and he realized that he carried on with an enchanted life, and he cherished the way that he carried on with an enchanted life. Wherever he went, there were many fans afterward. He was only that person.”
Baltimore Raven’s proprietor Steve Bisciotti considered Mr. Matte a local area legend.
“I was so eager to meet him at Colts instructional course when I was a child,” Mr. Bisciotti said. “The manner in which he accepted us was really unique. Numerous years after the fact, when the Ravens came to Baltimore in 1996, it was astonishing to then see our group embrace him.”
